Top 10 Things to Do in York this Summer

York is a great place to spend time during the summer months with something different to do around almost every corner! We’ve compiled a list of the top 10 attractions in and around the city this summer.


Shakespeare's Rose Theatre
To be or not to be? The award-winning Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre has returned to York this summer. The stellar cast will be performing the well-known plays Hamlet, The Tempest, Henry V and Twelfth Night. It’s on here until 1 September so make sure you don’t miss out on this unique opportunity.


Castle Howard Proms
Enjoy your fill of culture at the unforgettable Castle Howard Proms taking place on 3 August. Set in the stunning gardens at Castle Howard, classical music comes to life as guest soloist musicians will be accompanied by the London Gala Orchestra. The event will feature a breath-taking laser display and a brilliant firework finale.


York Walls Festival
From Saturday 10th August to Sunday 11th August you can enjoy lots of free family friendly events on and around the walls. This annual event offers families the chance to sample some of York’s rich history with open days at the towers, activities and specific routes to take along the walls, there really is something for everyone to enjoy!


National Railway Museum
This free museum is a brilliant way to spend the day. With lots of different activities, a miniature railway, a road train to take you to and from York Minster and a brand new play area for this summer the museum is great family day out!


York Dungeon
For those who like scary fun the York Dungeons offers a gruesome, humorous retelling of some of Britain’s history. The York Dungeons is designed for those aged 8 and above and is perfect for a day when the weather isn’t quite as sunny as it should be!


York's Chocolate Story
Lovers of chocolate, rejoice! York’s Chocolate Story is an entertaining and informative guided tour offering insight into the history of York’s famous chocolate history. This interactive tour lets you even learn the art of the chocolatier for yourself! York residents can receive 1/3 off the on the door admission rates on Sundays.


York Minster
Arguably York’s most famous attraction, York Minster is one of the world’s most magnificent cathedrals! Steeped in history and breath-taking architectural design the Minster is a place for the whole family to enjoy and learn about its history. Admission for children under 16 is free with a paying adult.


Museum Gardens
Set in the medieval ruins of St Mary’s Abbey, the York Museum Gardens are a beautiful space for relaxing on a warm summer’s day. The gardens are free to visit every day and are also home to Yorkshire’s oldest working observatory, an edible garden and a vast botanical collection. The gardens are also host to around 40 species of bird so be sure to keep a look out for them!


York Maze
Enjoy Europe’s biggest maize maze and a whole host of other outdoor activities at York Maze, just outside York. With over 20 rides, attractions and shows it’s a full day out for the whole family.


Yorkshire Air Museum
Yorkshire Air Museum is just 7 miles from York city centre. Visitors can learn about D Day, enjoy a paratrooper experience and witness live propeller aircraft days.
